Sir,
Herewith I send you an application to the Board of Education for the usual aid towards erecting a school House in the parish of Ardee.
The application you will perceive is numerously signed by the respectable protestant and catholic inhabitants. In making this application we have complied, I think with all the regulations laid down by the board. We have had the plan to estimate prepared by Mr Bolger Architect, 14 Talbot Street, to whom we had reference if necessary. I trust the pressing want of a school in so poor and populous a district will command the prompt and generous attention to the commissioners . . .
A few years later the building was completed and functioned as a schoolhouse for over a hundred years. Development work on the old parochial hall now known as The Gym has been going on during this year. On the morning of Tuesday May 30th 2000 this old building, part of the history of the town, was but a pile of rubble. The Schoolhouse, Parochial Hall, Bingo Hall -it filled many roles in its time, was no more. The porch had been added to the national school in 1938 and the inscription read, "Ardee National School House". |
